Black History Month

Black History Month Panel

Southwark Cathedral 5th October at 10:30am

Southwark Diocese Celebrated Black History Month in style this year. Upon the sad passing of Bishop Karowei last year, the Archbishop of Canterbury was invited to lead the ceremony with the emphasis of a celebration of black music.

He was joined by Karen Gibson, Andrew Mortum-Mumbey and th Choirmaster of St Saviours and Olive’s school, in a question and answer session after the service to celebrate diversity and remember the Windrush Generation.

This was followed by a “dance-off” with everyone participating whether they be wearing a Bishop’s Mitre or a Mayoral Gown!

Justin Welby spoke passionately of his appreciation of gospel music and it’s power to compel and drive the act of worship. Karen Gibson spoke of how gospel verse could be a vehicle for healing and how they provide a means of “working things out” as an intergenerational expression of 400 years of suffering through slavery. Father Andrew felt that popular music sung in church’s could spread the Christian message beyond it’s walls.

There will be a special service at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 5th October with a panel discussion with Archbishop Justin Welby and special guests. Booking is essential, Refreshments will be served afterwards.
