Walworth History through Song

Come join us for an unforgettable journey through the vibrant history of Walworth, told through the power of music! Experience the rich tapestry of stories that make up this unique community. This in person event will be held at St Paul’s Lorrimore Square, so mark your calendars and get ready to sing along to the tunes that shaped Walworth’s past!

We offer an hour of entertainment, piano and songs composed in and about Walworth through the ages, sung by four local residents in our fabulous Grade II listed church of St Paul’s in Lorrimore Square.

The Walworth Society have uncovered songs associated with west Walworth including those

· Sung in 1854 in the original St Paul’s Church by the choir.

· Written in the early 1600’s by Thomas Middleton, including the Ambassador of the King of Persia which will be played by Olcay Golak Demir on the Saz.

· Performed at the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens with a short contemporary addition by children from St Paul’s Primary School.

· Entertainment from the nearby Beehive Public House.

· Events recorded in Manor Place including a piece played at the opening of Manor Place baths in 1898 and one to celebrate the boxing matches that happened there over a period of 75 years.

· Recording the exploits of ‘The Forty Elephants’, an all-female, working-class crime gang from the area, known for their sophisticated shoplifting operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

And the audience will definitely be asked to sing-a-long, as we head to the Music Hall to eat boiled beef and carrots!
